Funny and upbeat, with just a pinch of sass, the Good Lovelies' textbook three-part harmonies, constant instrument swapping and witty on-stage banter have enlivened the folk music landscape since they joined forces in 2006.

How the Good Lovelies (Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough and Sue Passmore) got together is a bit of a mystery: Sue remembers meeting her band mates during a limbo competition, Caroline thinks they met at a chess tournament, but Kerri is convinced they first crossed paths during a bar fight. (After seeing these ladies in performance, I really doubt that --- they have a "squeeky clean" feel about them.) Whatever the story may be, the ladies immediately realized they had something special, so they hit the road on a mission to charm Canadian audiences coast to coast.

Their tireless rain or shine outlook and undeniable mutual respect have helped the trio weather years of constant touring. With jaunts to Austrailia, the UK and the US in their 2011 schedule, the Good Lovelies’ road-tested tenacity will bring them further afield than ever before.

Lighthearted songwriting and irresistibly buoyant dispositions have made them the darlings of the summer festival circuit, including spots at the storied Mariposa and Hillside Festivals and the Montreal Jazz Festival. They have toured with Stuart McLean and the Vinyl Cafe and appeared on stages and in studios with Broken Social Scene, Kathleen Edwards and Jill Barber .

In addition to their acclaimed holiday album, Under the Mistletoe (2009), which showcases old and new seasonal tunes (including three original songs), the Good Lovelies’ self-titled full-length album (also released in 2009) proved their blithe brand of folk music has year-round appeal. With this record, the Good Lovelies won New Emerging Artist at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. In 2010, this same album received a Juno for Roots/Traditional Album of the Year.

Let the Rain Fall, their third full-length album, is an ode to camaraderie. With equal parts city and country, highway and home, wistfulness and sass, the Good Lovelies’ good humour and self-assurance shines through from the toe-tapping start of “Made for Rain” to the sweet final notes in the French-flecked “Mrs. T.” In between, you’ll hear reflections on urban imperfections with “Backyard”, straight-up love songs like “Best I Know” and upbeat numbers like “Kiss Me in the Kitchen.”

Rita MacNeil: My Favourite Songs My Favorite Season -------- Nov 27

Rita MacNeil is a Canadian Country and Folk artist from the community of Big Pond on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island. Her biggest hit, "Flying On Your Own", was a crossover Top 40 hit in 1987 and was covered by Anne Murray the following year, although she has had hits on the country charts throughout her career. In the United Kingdom, MacNeil's song "Working Man" was a #11 hit in 1990.

In 1990, she was the bestselling country artist in Canada, outselling even Garth Brooks and Clint Black. She is also the only female singer ever to have three separate albums chart in the same year in Australia.

A native of Big Pond, Cape Breton County, MacNeil first performed on stage in 1971, and recorded her first album, Born a Woman, in 1975. She performed at folk festivals throughout the 1970s and 1980s, culminating in her major label debut and pop breakthrough in 1987.

MacNeil hosted a CBC Television variety show, Rita and Friends, from 1994 to 1997. The show won a Gemini Award in 1996. She also runs a tea room in her hometown of Big Pond, which has become one of Cape Breton Island's most popular tourist attractions.

She was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1992 and was awarded the Order of Nova Scotia in 2005.

She was featured in a Season 4 episode of Trailer Park Boys, wherein she and her band are forced to harvest marijuana.

Research done by historians Steve Hewitt and Christabelle Sethna on documents from the now-defunct Royal Canadian Mounted Police Security Service have revealed accounts of the force having spied on feminists, including MacNeil, during the 1970s.

MacNeil wrote her memoirs On A Personal Note with Anne Simpson in 1998.

Flying On Her Own, a play based on MacNeil's life and featuring many of her songs, premiered at Live Bait Theatre in Sackville, NB in 2000. Written by Canadian playwright Charlie Rhindress, it was subsequently produced by Neptune Theatre in Halifax, NS in 2002 and published by Playwrights Canada Press in 2008.

On October 19th, Edmonton folk artist Lizzy Hoyt was nominated for a 2011 Canadian Folk Music Award in the category Traditional Singer of the Year.

Hoytʼs album “Home” was released in 2010 and was produced by Juno-award winner Jeremiah McDade. The album features Hoyt as a Canadian “east-meets-west” artist who combines the energetic and rhythmic fiddling from the Maritimes with country-folk songs from the west.

Hoyt is currently in France working on an artistic video for her song “Vimy Ridge” which was named one of three finalists in the international 2010 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. The video is being filmed at the Vimy Ridge Memorial in France at the end of October. It will be released in Spring 2012 before the 95th anniversary of Vimy Ridge on April 9th, 2012. Hoyt will be performing as a part of the Vimy Ridge Memorial Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 5th in Vimy, France and at the Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial on November 6th in Albert, France. Upon her return to Canada in November, Hoyt will be busy performing numerous shows in Alberta and Saskatchewan including our presentation on Nov 24.

Sheldon Casavant, Magician and Illusionist, will at the Lloydminster Public Library at 4 pm on Tuesday, Oct 25 with his illustrated children's book, "Morton the Magician and His Magnificent Magic Show". It is the inspirational tale of Morton, a boy on a journey to become a real magician. Harry, a trained magician's rabbit, helps Morton overcome his fear of performing in front of an audience. Together, Morton and Harry create a magic show that can only be described as... magnificent!

At 7:30 pm, Sheldon will be on our stage. Our audience will witness illusions that will challenge their perception of what is possible...because it is magic!

Lizzy Hoyt is a fiddler, singer, songwriter, entertainer, multi-instrumentalist and recording artist from Edmonton, AB. This Canadian ‘east-meets-west’ performer combines the energetic and rhythmic fiddling from the maritimes with country-folk songs from the west. She is known for her talent, professionalism and most importantly, for her first-rate performances!

Lizzy’s technical skills as an instrumentalist are evident from the moment she walks on stage. She is easily able to move through fiery strathspeys, toe-tapping reels, heart-felt laments, old-time waltzes and breakdowns, a skill that contributes to the variety and excitement in her show. She is a musician devoted to the rich tradition of live music. It is her objective to exhibit excellence in live entertainment whenever and wherever she performs. Her musical talents combined with her stage presence, audience rapport and sense of humor create a truly first-class show that audiences everywhere find entertaining.

Lizzy performs with a combination of acoustic guitar, upright bass, Irish whistles, Scottish border pipes, harp, bodhran (Irish drum), piano and accordion.

Lizzy’s Celtic-folk sound comes from combining different styles of music that inspire her: “I have always loved Celtic and Maritime music, probably because it is a part of my heritage. However, I am also inspired by my surroundings. Growing up in Alberta has definitely influenced my music.” Some of Lizzy’s musical influences include Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, Natalie MacMaster and Lunasa.

Lizzy released her second album in June 2010. Produced by Juno-award winner Jeremiah McDade and Lizzy Hoyt, the album contains a mixture of traditional material, Lizzy’s original Canadian-inspired songs as well as new renditions of well-known songs like Dolly Parton’s Jolene, Allister MacGillivray’s Song for the Mira and Jay Ungar’s Ashokan Farewell.

Lizzy’s original songs stand out as highlights of her new album. Home, the title track, is inspired by Lizzy’s love of the prairies and the Alberta sky. Her song,Vimy Ridge, written after studying in northern France in 2005, tells the story of a Canadian soldier during the battle of Vimy Ridge in World War One. If one track represented her sound best, it would be the heart-breaking ballad,Together Forever. It is a song inspired by the sounds of old-country music but adds soaring whistle melodies from Ireland. Finally, her song, Picture on my Heart, paints a beautiful and upbeat picture of love for the listener!

The timeless sound of the aptly named The Deep Dark Woods belongs to the depressing winters of the north. Pulsing with human warmth, these original songs echo through the lonesome night. Ryan Boldt’s plain-spoken lyrics offer a strong but gentle tone which understates poetry, often times as startling as hot blood in fresh snow. Despite the dark themes, the heaviness never overwhelms the music’s playfulness.

An utterly fun rhythm section, brilliant guitar work, and eerily rich harmonies drive the songs. One could easily be forgiven for mistaking their songs as treasures of decades past, as The Deep Dark Woods approach their instruments with studied respect for the honoured traditions of the shadowy side of roots music.

The Deep Dark Woods’ newest release Winter Hours is a collection of their best recordings yet. Working with Juno award winning producer/musician Steve Dawson at “The Factory” in Vancouver, they managed to truly bring out an energy that the new songs deserved, recording the album live off the floor. What was created was an album full of raw emotion, sadness, beautiful vocals and harmonies, new sounds, and well thought out arrangements.

Sheldon was nominated in 2009 and 2010 as Entertainer of the Year by the Canadian Events Industry and was selected to perform at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Throughout the years, these international ambassadors of Irish music have maintained their timeless ability to deliver a rollicking, rousing performance of good cheer-one that will soon have you singing and clapping along. Their songs have become anthems of revelry and joy among generation after generation of fans. - Belfast Telegaph, 2010

After forming in 1963, The Irish Rovers celebrate 45 years since their debut recording, appropriately titled, The First of The Irish Rovers, with a television special and their 2011-Home in Ireland tour. It has been a magical journey from their first to their latest release, Gracehill Fair, which has had high praise from Celtic radio announcers from Belfast to Maui, and been nominated Album of the Year in the Vancouver Island Music Awards. As with most of their albums over the last decade, Gracehill Fair was recorded in both Canada and Ireland on their own record label, Rover Records. The CD includes new original rollicking drinking songs for which the band is best known, as well as a selection of beautiful original ballads. Also recently, their well-known recording of Drunken Sailor has gained over 3 million hits on You Tube!

All band members hail from Ireland. Founding member George Millar is from Ballymena, original member Wilcil McDowell is from Larne, John Reynolds from Belfast, Sean O'Driscoll from Cork, Ian Millar from Ballymena, and percussionist Fred Graham is also from Belfast. In September of 2010, the boys chose their favorite spots to film while producing a new DVD, Home in Ireland, around their old stomping grounds, in Northern Ireland.

Band founder, George Millar says of the television special, “Home In Ireland is basically The Irish Rovers ‘Coming Home’ because that is our home, for all of us. We want to show the world what the northwest Irish coast is like. I’ve traveled the world now for over 40 years and there’s nothing like it.”

Since 1963, The Rovers haven’t missed a beat, releasing more than 35 albums in North America and dozens more internationally, while selling sold out tours for 45 years. The freedom to produce their own music on their record label, Rover Records, combined with their years of experience, original compositions, and an All-Ireland Champion in their ranks, has contributed to their longevity. They, in fact, were the inspiration for one of the world’s best-known party anthems, Wasn’t That A Party which was written by their friend, Tom Paxton. The boys in the band have lived large.

The story of The Irish Rovers is one for the big screen; three award-winning national and international television series, topping the music charts again and again, several appearances as musical bank robbers on The Virginian, guest roles on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and The Beachcombers and more than 45 years of touring their music around the world.

The lads were personally asked by Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau to “please become Canadian” so they could represent Canada throughout the world. Since then, they have represented Canada at no less than five world Expos and received Canada's 'Harold Moon Award' in recognition for a quarter century of contributions to the International music world. Their story begins in Ontario in 1963, where the 16-year old George Millar and 23-year old Jim Ferguson, both new emigrants from N. Ireland, met in Toronto at an Irish function. They sang together ‘til dawn; and so the Irish Rovers were launched. George’s cousin, Joe Millar, immigrated to Canada the following year and was recruited as he stepped off the plane. After several successful months in Ontario as The Irish Rovers, the trio made their way to Calgary, Alberta, to join forces with George’s brother, Will. "Will, was presenting a children’s TV show called Just 4 Fun. We went on the show and sang, Whiskey You’re the Devil,” George Millar recalls. “There were these little five-year-olds sitting on the floor in front of us. Of course the switchboards lit up with people going, ‘Please don’t be putting those songs in our children’s ears.’ That’s how we began.”

The success of their first album, lead to a second, which included a sweet little song which they had been playing in the clubs, called “The Unicorn”. The words were from a poem written by Shel Silverstein who wrote for Playboy. The lads "stuck a tune to it", and the result was a multi-million seller, beloved by a generation. Since then, there have been dozens of releases and worldwide tours. The Rovers used their new-found fame to promote Irish music (including other musicians from Ireland) to the US and Canada.

A few years later, The Irish Rovers hosted their first television series, The Irish Rovers Show, the most popular variety show of its time. Regular guests included Irish music legends The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Rover, Wilcil McDowell remembers another special guest, "We were expecting just Johnny Cash and his guitar, who would normally be backed by our little house band. But he came in with the June Carter, The Tennessee Three, Carl Perkins and the entire Carter Family. It was terrific but our producers were worried that we couldn't afford them all. Johnny said "Don't worry about it. Ireland has been very good to me. Just consider this, a part of the favor returned. And I think instead of doing just the one show, they did three."

Today, The Irish Rovers continue to perform in theatres around the world, with original members George Millar (also a prolific songwriter), and Wilcil McDowell. Will Millar left the group in 1994, and sadly, Jimmy passed away in 1997. Joe retired from the band, in 2005 while his son, Ian (who inherited his father's golden tones) took up the family ranks. Big Sean O'Driscoll and John Reynolds have been playing with the band for nearly 20 years, and drummer, Fred Graham has been touring with the lads since 2007.

Fans will hear the old favorites like Black Velvet Band, Wasn’t That A Party, Drunken Sailor, and The Unicorn, plus new favorites from their new television special.

Irish Descendants - Sep 12

Formed in the spring of 1990, The Irish Descendants, have been a mainstay in the Newfoundland and Canadian music industry for over two decades. In that time the band has performed over 4000 shows across North America and beyond!

With the founding members all hailing from various outport fishing communities, the original goal for the group was to take the music that they all learned and performed at home in their kitchens, to the festival stages, pubs, and concert halls of their beloved Newfoundland. In a very short time, after the release of their first CD Misty Morning Shore (1991), the first CD ever released by a Newfoundland band, it was clear that they were on track to take their music on a worldwide journey!

The independent success of that first release was a bright moment for the band. The Newfoundland public was excited by the music and it soon sold over 15,000 copies. That success, led to signing a 5 album international recording deal with Warner Music Canada, another first for a band from the province. This relationship set the seeds for what has been a whirlwind 21-year career. The group began touring across Canada with a vengeance, some years doing close to 300 shows, and began to make their mark in the mainland markets. The trail they blazed would make way for a huge wave of successful bands and artists from the province for many of the following years!

This workshop is for youth and all levels of songwriters. It is a fun and informal session where songwriters gather in a large circle and share their passion for crafting songs.

Facilitators Charlotte & Sarah Command, Kayla Patrick, Micah Turchet & Braden Gates will lead off with a song and discussion. See their bios: here. Then, we will go around the circle and give each participant an opportunity to perform their song. Participants will receive constructive feedback from the facilitators and others in the circle.

There is absolutely no obligation to perform a song. You are welcome to attend the circle just to learn more about songwriting and meet like minded individuals.

The Friends of the Theatre Committee have been working hard this summer on our fundraising goal of $64,000. Good news....we are very close and only need another $4,025. Thanks to the committee for your dedication!!! And thank you to our wonderful donors!!!! We only have one week left before we send the Season Brochure to the printer -- and we would like to have the fundraising wrapped up by then and have all donors recognized in our Season Brochure. Please assist us by passing the word around about our situation. If you have any questions about how to become a "Friend of the Theatre", please call Gwen Mottram at 780.808.3244. If anyone is unable to write a cheque this week...no worries we are taking pledges as well. All donations are gratefully appreciated...no matter what size.

Here is the situation...we will not be receiving Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) funding during our 2011 fiscal year because the AFA restructured their grant funding --- extending the application deadline from mid July to mid November. We are applying for funding this year but instead of receiving funds in October 2011 we will not receive funds until February 2012. Without our fundraising efforts we would not be able to balance the budget for 2011 and would have come up significantly short for 2011. As mentioned, there will be AFA funding for 2012 and therefore next year's budget will be easier to reach. If our fiscal year-end was March 31 (like most arts organizations) rather than December 31 there would have been no impact on our organization.

See How They Run

See How They Run is a classic English comedy by Philip King. Its title is a line from the nursery rhyme Three Blind Mice. It is considered a farce for its tense comic situations and headlong humour, heavily playing on mistaken identity, doors, and vicars.

Set in the idyllic village of Merton-cum-Middlewick in 1940s England, the village inhabitants are preparing themselves for the imminent threat of Nazi invasion. Resident nosy-parker and spinster, Miss Skillon, becomes convinced that her beloved vicar’s actress wife is having an affair and attempts to expose her. Add an escaped German prisoner of war, a handsome actor, the visiting Bishop of Lax, a rotund locum priest and some meddling neighbors and hilarious confusion and mayhem result.

Canadian Heritage Funding

Vic Juba Community Theatre will continue to provide audiences with a dynamic range of performances, thanks to support from the Government of Canada. Funding was announced on July 18 by Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament (Vegreville-Wainwright), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

This funding will support the Vic Juba Community Theatre's presentation of its annual Dr. H.A. McDonald Season. This year's performing arts series will feature up to 15 acts that represent a diverse cross-section of artistic expressions, such as dance, popular music, folk music, and blues. The series will also include professional theatre presentations and outreach activities in the community.

"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in important organization like the Vic Juba Community Theatre," said Minister Moore. "By supporting these activities, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our communities and support our arts, culture, and heritage."

"Alberta is home to a strong cultural scene, and our Government is proud to support its artists and presenters," said Mr. Benoit. "Today's funding will allow local residents to enjoy professional performances and cultural experiences in their community."

"Vic Juba Community Theatre is very grateful to the Government of Canada for providing this essential funding to our organization to present artists within our Dr. H. A. McDonald Season,"said Gwen Mottram, Treasurer. "The diversity and quality of the artists we present enriches and improves the quality of life for residents of the Lloydminster region."

The Vic Juba Community Theatre, established in 2002, aims to present diverse programming while promoting the arts as an essential component of community life. The theatre hosts more than 160 events every year and is managed by a non-profit organization.

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $22,000 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.

Congratulations to Ross Ulmer-Ulmer Chevrolet who was the first recipient of the Mayor's Award for Sustained Support of the Arts. The presentation was made by Mayor Jeff Mulligan at the Vic Juba Community Theatre on June 9.

Ulmer Chevrolet is our Stage Sponsor and has been for the past 6 years and has made an annual donation for the last 10 years to the Lloydminster Regional Theatre Foundation Gala.

Our facility may not have existed if it was not for Ross Ulmer's vision and determination for a performing arts venue in Lloydminster. As a volunteer Mr. Ulmer served as Chair of the Lloydminster Theatre Functional Planning & Design Committee from 1993 through 1999, Ross is one of the Directors of the Lloydminster Regional Theatre Foundation, and he is Chairman of the Annual Theatre Foundation Gala. Ross was also a founding member of the Lloydminster Jazz Society (Jazz on the Border), a director for five years with the adult jazz ensemble, and has organized numerous music clinics for local students.

Arts Awards will also be presented during the evening. Festival Showcase is a co-presentation with Arts Without Borders Festival.

Play Synopsis: Dan, a modern-day Casanova, brings his reluctant friend Wade to a speed-dating event hoping to cure him of heart break. The men meet a variety of interesting and unusual women during the event.

Meet the Cast:

Jeremy Kerr as "Wade"

It was the fall of 1974 when Jeremy was thrust forth on to the world stage. It was a dramatic experience for everyone involved, and an event that at least his mother will never forget. From that moment on Jeremy would dedicate his life to studying the fine art of acting. (This, of course, was done by watching a lot of television and movies.) It was in fact under the tutelage of that great Canadian actor William Shatner that Jeremy would learn the importance of enunciation. It would be in junior high school that Jeremy would realize the extreme talent he had for eliciting an emotional response from others. Frustration from his teachers, pity from his youth pastors, and that greatest of motivators, mocking laughter from his classmates. Thus it was only natural with this background in the performing arts that as Jeremy grew into adulthood that he would pursue a career as a mechanic. Adulthood would also bring the most challenging and rewarding of roles, that of a husband and father. A role that he hopes will be his greatest legacy. It was in the fall of 2009 that Jeremy had the great pleasure of performing with the Vic Juba Community Players for the first time, in the one-act play Asylum which was enrolled in Theatre Saskatchewan's TheatreOne competition. Jeremy received the Best Supporting Actor Award for his role in Asylum. In 2010, Jeremy played Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles. So what will Jeremy do next? To answer that question he will quote another Canadian with a talent for producing an emotional response from others, Pierre Trudaeu. “Just watch me!”

Robin Egerton as "Dan"

As a radio producer and DJ, Robin gets to be pretty crazy at work. But, it’s still a relatively restrained kind of crazy. That’s why he sought out theater to fully unleash the rest of his creative insanity! Having spent his childhood in New York, Robin was exposed to the highest forms of artistic expression from a young age. The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, Radio City Music Hall, and Broadway were all frequent weekend trips, and those early days sparked the interest and formed the crucial building blocks of knowledge that would help shape his path in life. After coming to Lloydminster from Edmonton to work in radio in 2007, Robin quickly realized that pursuing extra-curricular activities in local theater was a logical, and fun choice. The skills learned in theater are easily transposed to radio, and vice versa. Robin has always been a performer, one of the blessings of being an only child in a musical and artistic family. He feels at home on a stage, behind a mic and generally being involved in anything creative with other creative individuals. It’s all about life. Expressing it, enjoying it, living it.

Jamie Ollen as "Freddy"

Jamie has been involved with theatre for several years -- he was bitten by the acting bug in Grade 6. You have seen him previously in a SPCA production, most recently as Gladius in When in Rome or as an Elvis character in The Dastardly Doctor Devereaux.

Jacqueline Bruce as "Sophie"

Jacqueline teaches Adult Upgrading at Onion Lake First Nation. She's been involved in community theatre in Lloydminster for over ten years, most recently in The Odd Couple (female version), and The Hound of the Baskervilles. She's had a really great time working with the truly talented people involved in 300 Seconds.

Lydia Adams as "Lisa" and "Michelle"

Lydia Adams was born a unique and different person and possesses many talents. She enjoys spending her time with her family and friends and is ecstatic about talking with anyone. She started singing at a very young age, pretty much since she could talk. Her whole life she dreamed of performing on the big stage and being famous. She is a triple threat in the performing world. Lydia is fluent in singing, dancing, and acting. In her younger years she took part in a choir for years, and over the past few years she has took part in performing a lead role in Grease and Footloose, among other smaller productions. For the future she hopes to be on the big screen with albums under her belt. She is currently looking forward to traveling in Alberta to participate as an extra in a few movies. She considers this a stepping stone to her future career.

Whitney Stinson as "Judy" and "Mary"

Since she was 3 years old, Whitney has held a place in her heart for the arts. That's when she started ballet training and fell in love with being onstage. In a past career she has been a children's drama instructor and a dance teacher. Today she finds her passion in television hosting a local talk show, and reporting for NewCap News. But all the cameras in the world can't replace the feeling of live art, so she finds herself volunteering her time for the Vic Juba Community Players, where the heart and soul of Lloydminster is always in the spotlight.

Amy Rederburg as "Amanda"

Amy Rederburg is a graduate of Mount Royal University’s Broadcasting program, specializing in creative writing and production. She has a passion for the arts, with a built-in drive to entertain the masses. Previously, she worked with the Pandora Players in Edson, Alberta on a comedy variety show. Amy is thrilled to join the Vic Juba Community Players for her first performance in “300 Seconds”.

Cynthia Stringer as "Raven"

Cynthia Stringer attended a rural school Northeast of Lloydminster from Kindergarten to Grade 12. She joined her school's drama club in grades 7 and 8, the only years it was offered during her attendance. With a background more in the realm of fine arts than performing arts, she was happy to try something new and excitedly dawned a southern drawl in her first acting role. It was through this experience that she fell in love with theater. In her final year in the drama club, Cynthia opted to direct the play and won the school's drama award. The opportunity to perform in 300 Seconds was a lucky chance and though it has been more than ten years since performing in her small drama club, Cynthia's love of theater has not wavered and she is delighted to be a part of the Vic Juba Community Players.

Lauren "Ellie" Helmeczi as "Jane"

Lauren "Ellie" Helmeczi is a 19 year old native to Lloydminster. She has spent most of her life watching theater events and finally decided to become involved in them, and apart from a couple musicals in her high school days, and a few misplaced attempts at showing some talent at talent shows, she is taking her exuberance for attention to a higher level!

Heather Muchowski as "Audrey" and "Tracy"

Heather Muchowski grew up in Lloydminster and has always had a passion for the arts. Heather has been involved with the Vic Juba Community Players in such productions as Bridal Terrorism (sister of the bride - June 2009) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Janet – Oct 2010). Heather volunteers at other theatre events throughout the year. When she’s not on stage acting, she is performing and teaching ballroom dance with Fame Studios. Her boyfriend, Robin (who plays Dan in 300 Seconds) is also her ballroom partner. Recently, she has joined the Lloydminster Ladies of Belly Dance who perform cultural dancing in various local communities to raise funds for prevention of violence against women and breast cancer research. Heather loves working with youth. She volunteers regularly with the Lloydminster Community Youth Centre, providing an arts & crafts club and the occasional dance lesson. Heather holds a commerce degree and works at a local financial institution as a corporate trainer of business lending.

Laurie Harris as "Sheila"

Laurie Harris is an instructor at Lakeland College and her favourite past time is theatre. Through the years Laurie has been involved in various community theatre productions. Her most enjoyable roles have been in Butterflies are Free, Curious Savage, Pack of Lies and Asylum. Laurie is most recently enjoying her time spent in preparing for 300 Seconds with the Vic Juba Community Players.

Brenda Brosseau as "Sandy"

Brenda is delighted to return the Vic Juba Stage once again for the production of 300 Seconds. She initially got her feet wet with the Vic Juba Community Players in the early 2009 and has since been involved with productions within the group as well as productions outside the Community Players. Brenda is an active member of the community and believes in giving back to the community in positive ways. Brenda hopes you, the audience, enjoy this production and the many more performances of this evening.

Jennifer Anderson - Director

Jennifer Anderson is a graduate of the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Theatre. Through studying theatre for four years, Jennifer has acted and directed various productions in both Edmonton and Lloydminster. Most recent credits include starring as Judith in Ash Girl by Timberlake Wertenbaker, acting as Elaine in Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring, and directing Apple by Vern Thiessen. Jennifer was excited to get back into directing with 300 Seconds and would like to thank the Vic Juba Community Players for the opportunity.

Denis Foss - Stage Manager

Denis has been involved in the theatre for the last 20 years and some 25 productions. Vic Juba Community Players thanks Denis for stepping in during rehearsals when a cast member was absent. As a result, Denis has played the role on every character in this production. Thank you Denis!!

Annual Fundraiser featuring Rick Mercer

Led by Ross Ulmer, this year's committee had a blast in putting together the 2011 theatre fundraiser featuring Rick Mercer. The event was a success !! But it could not have been a success without the support of many organizations and individuals.

Committee members were Ross Ulmer, Gwen Mottram, Denis Foss, Shelly Reitsma, Bernice Fritsch, Colleen Valentine Gazdewich, Chris Armstrong, and Karen Fawcett.

The committee sends many thanks to Sheila Bouchard for her assistance with our silent auction. Thanks also to Trevor Reitsma, Michelle Lake, Monte Armstrong, Darlene Major and Bob Mottram for their assistance with setup and take down of the event. Here is a photo of the reception area prior to the crowd showing up (and they started showing up 30 minutes before we officially opened).

Festival Showcase: Celebration of the Arts Awards

Planning is underway for our Festival Showcase event which will be held on June 9 (Thursday) during the Arts Without Borders Festival.

Festival Showcase is a local variety show. There will be musicians, dancers, literary readings (by Writers Ink), and a one-act comedy about a speed-dating event (performed by our Players group).

Vic Juba Community Theatre was saddened to hear that former Board Member, Anne Townsend, passed away today. Prior to serving on our Board of Directors for several years, Anne served as the Seat Sponsor Chairman when a dedicated committee of volunteers was established to raise funds to build our venue. In addition to her work on our Board of Directors, Anne was a founding member and the first President of the Lloydminster Concert Series Association. She was also one of the key committee members to assist the Arts Without Borders Festival in hosting the 2007 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards. Anne was a true supporter of the Arts and her community. We will miss you Anne.

The Story of Coppelia

You may not be familiar with the story of Coppelia -- so we thought we should share the story with you -- we believe this will help you enjoy the ballet performance taking place on Feb 24.

Act 1

The story is about a man called Dr Coppélius who makes dolls. He has just invented a mechanical doll which he calls Coppélia. The doll looks just like a real person. He puts the doll on the balcony of his house. A young man called Franz sees the doll, thinks she is real, and falls in love with her. Franz’s fiancée, a girl called Swanilda, is very angry.

The peasants come in and dance. The mayor comes in and says that, because the town is going to get a new bell, there will be a feast. All couples who are engaged to be married will get some money from the Duke The mayor asks Swanilda whether she will be there. Swanilda wants to know whether Franz will still be faithful to her. She has an ear of corn. If it makes a rustling noise, then that will mean that Franz does love her. However much she shakes it there is no sound. Franz tells her that he still loves her.

When Dr Coppélius goes out for a walk he drops his key. Swanilda and her 4 friends, find it and pick it up. They decide to go into the house to see Coppélia. Franz decides to go too. When Dr Coppélius comes back he finds his house full of people.

Act 2

Swanilda and her friends are astonished to find that Coppélia is only a doll. They make the other mechanical dolls move and they dance around them. Doctor Coppélius enters and chases them all away, apart from Swanilda who has hidden. She takes Coppélia’s place. When Franz looks through the window Doctor Coppélius pretends to be one of his own dolls. He invites him in, then grabs him and threatens to punish him. Then he has another idea. He gives Franz something to make him fall asleep and then tries to bring Coppélia to life by putting Franz’s spirit into the doll. The dollmaker is delighted when it seems to be working, but he does not realize that it is, in fact, Swanilda who has disguised herself as the doll. He does not know what to do with her, and teaches her a Spanish dance and a Scottish dance. When Franz wakes up, Swanilda’s friends return and Doctor Coppélius realizes he has been tricked.

Act 3

The Duke gives out purses of gold to the couples who are engaged to be married. Doctor Coppélius comes in and complains that his dolls have been ruined. The Duke gives him some gold. The peasants dance the “Masque of the Hours”. Franz and Swanilda are forgiven and they are married.

E.T.A.Hoffmann

The story of the ballet comes from a story, published in 1815, called “Der Sandmann” (“The Sandman”) by E.T.A.Hoffmann, but the ballet has a different character. E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story is quite frightening, but the ballet is pure comedy.

The first performances

The plan for the first performance of Coppélia to take place in 1869 had to change because the dancer who was to dance the main part of Swanilda was seriously ill. A desperate search for another dancer took place. Delibes went all the way to Italy looking for a suitable ballerina, but he did not find one. However, the choreographer Saint-Léon then discovered a girl of 15 in Paris. Her name was Giuseppina Bozzacchi. She was exceptionally gifted and very youthful. She was very young indeed to be chosen for a big part in a professional ballet, but Saint-Léon made some changes to suit the young girl and she danced the part with tremendous success at its first performance on. Napoleon III and the Empress Eugénie were in the audience. Bozzacchi danced with incredible grace, and she was an excellent actress as well. Everyone loved her charm.

In July the Franco-Prussian War broke out and there were no further performances of Coppélia for a while as the theatres were closed. Saint-Léon died in September, and then, tragically, Giuseppina Bozzacchi died of cholera on her 17th birthday.

Coppélia has been performed more often at the Paris Opéra than any other ballet.

Good-Bye and Congrats to Suzanne Malo

This past Tuesday, February 1, we said good-bye to our Operations and Promotions Coordinator, Suzanne Malo. Suzanne has been with us since 2007 and has taken our promotions and social media presence to a new level. Suzanne is also a Founding Member of the Vic Juba Community Players -- if Suzanne wasn't acting in one of theatre productions, she was the director, or she was assisting with the promotion, costumes, scripts, props, or the set. In 2009, Suzanne was one of the key people in our successful bid to host the Saskatchewan TheatreOne Festival. Thanks for all your hard work Suzanne !!

A sold out children's performance at 10:30am is very exciting for us! The VJCT only started up one year ago this November!!

We went from 7 members to over 30 and are still growing.

This week we have The Monkey's Paw. June 9, 2011 we will be doing yet another one act called "300 Seconds" , about speed dating and then November 2011 another play, a british comedy in fact will hit the stage called :See How They Run".

We our very proud of our little group. Years ago Lloyd Little Theatre was in full swing but due to burn out the members folded the group.

We are have the set ready for full rehearsal tonight, and the paw in place.

It will be a great performance I'm sure!!

Well, now that you had a chance to do a bit of reading on this fabulous man - John Lee Sanders,
he will be performing on stage on October 6th, at 7:30pm.

Mr. Sanders' stage presence is mezmerizing, his vocals and spell-bounding piano playing are not to be missed!

When I saw him at showcase, my eyes didn't leave the stage. The last time, I can ever remember being so involved, if you will, with a performance/performer of that caliber was when I was a little girl and my mom took me to see Liberace.

I was in the front row. I guess he also had his eye on me, because I remember him stopping in the middle of his song ans asking my mom if I was alright because I had stopped blinking.

She told him that I was fine, he then came over to me and asked if I played the piano, I told him yes and he bend down and showed me his piano ring. He told me that if I continued to play piano and practiced every day, that maybe one day I would own a ring like this too. He thanked me for being such a good little audience member. I was spellbound and my mom almost fainted!

In my opinion, Mr. Sanders has that same stage presence and caliber of entertaining.

This will be a fantastic performance.

It's one that is not to be missed!

Some consider Paul to be one of the best emerging songwriters in Alberta. This University of Alberta student (Education) splits his time between writing songs and performing at the many venues across the province. Some of his more notable past performances have been the Edmonton Folk Music Festival (2009) and the Canmore Folk Festival (2010).

Kalsey Kulyk

Small town, Canadian singer/songwriter Kalsey Kulyk has always had a love for music. By the age of 3 Kalsey began performing in front of live audiences and she hasn’t stopped ever since. In 2008, Kalsey was diagnosed with cancer. Being more inspired than ever Kalsey kept writing, and wrote songs about her experience, love and positivity. Kalsey is now in remission and she’s not holding anything back.

Arts Without Borders is thrilled to partner with the Vic Juba Community Theatre in presenting this year's Folk Fest.

The Lloyd Folk Fest runs from 5:00pm to 9:00pm on Saturday, June 12 at the Vic Juba Community Theatre. We'll kick things off with a kid's puppet show and wrap up the evening with Murray McLauchlan. In between we have blues singer Kat Danser and pop/rock duo Fool's Tongue.

George Bowser and Rick Blue have been writing and performing music and comedy together since 1978. Colorectal Surgeons around the world are familiar with them through the song 'Working Where the Sun Don't Shine', which was first heard on 'Madly Off In All Directions' in 1997. They appeared at the 2008 edition of the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. That performance was telecast in January 2009 on CBC-TV. They can often be seen on television shows compiled from their many festival appearances since 1988.

Long past due.

Last night Mr. Robert Munsch graced our stage telling stories to young, old and somewhere in between. He had two shows back to back, one starting at 5pm and the other at 7pm.

Even with all his personal troubles, he performed two fantastic shows. He is a gentleman in every sense of the word. Not one child or adult went away without their books being signed or a little chat being had or a photo being taken.

Well, our last dance recital is this weekend! Rush, rush, rush...oh, how they all flew by!

Studio Encore will be wrapping it up this weekend.

Our next performance will be a benefit for Haiti and Ecuador. Samuel Lundell and a few of his performing arts friends will get together on May 18th. All money raised will be sent to help people in need.

Hansel & Gretel will be here on May 27th. This performance is done by Alberta Opera. A real crowd pleaser. Great for all ages!

A Lullaby for Doll Face is going to be performing on stage March 5/6 and March 12/13.

It is a story about a place back in time where things were simple and the West was wild. This is a story of a young girl and her friends, a group of confused gun slingers, frustrated parents and a flock of sheep trying to make their way in turn of the century Paradise Valley!

Today is a busy one. We are getting ready for a Hounds rehearsal tonight and tomorrow the College starts rehearsal for their production of A Lullaby for Doll Face, which is written by Jeremy Lawrence. It is Musical Theatre for Kids and is supported by the Local College here is Lloydminster.

Their production is the beginning of March!!

February is another busy month. We have Dori Daley and Tim Hus, Outerbridge, Ballet Jorgen Canada, and Corb Lund gracing the stage.

We are close to being sold out for Corb and about half sold out for the rest.

We are still in rehearsals and are now getting the flats and props together for the play in March. Th actors are off book tonight, so it should be interesting!!!

The play rehearsals have started and are now in full swing. In community theatre, I find, and I have been involved with community theatre for years....eons...that you get people of all kinds. I mean, personalities, that you wonder just where have they been hiding all this time? Community Theatre involves people, ordinary everyday people with a love for the stage or some aspects of it.

The cast for this play is phenomenal.

I see heart, and dedication, and I see them trying their best to perfect the English accent. I see history on the Baskerville Story being read up on and history on the year it was done.

This is the reason I love Community Theatre over Professional. To the Community Theatre People its a passion that never tires. Since I started working at this performing arts centre, I have seen many professionals paste their smile(s) on, with Community Theatre, its genuine.....thats why Community Theatre is so important. It brings people who would have never crossed paths before together under one roof to pull off a phenomenal production. It brings working people together to share the same passion with one focus. It brings strangers together to help each other out on performance night when a line is missed. It strengthens the Community as a whole.

The Vic Juba Community Theatre is getting very busy.

This coming February is going to be amazing. We have Rory Allen who is a Tribute Artist. He does a wonderful tribute to the King - Elvis. He is here on the 3rd and the Lloydminster Regional Achives is presenting him.

Also in February is Max-I-Mime. Maxim Fomitchev got his performing start at age 13 in his birthplace Moscow, Russia. An amazing and well-studied Mime Artist, Max was frequently the only deaf performer in his advanced classes, and competitions. He will be performing on the 6th.

February 18th is Cowboy Poet, Doris Daley and Canadiana Country Artist, Tim Hus. They will be gracing our stage with two very different types of storytelling.

February 19th are Illusionist Extraordinaires, Ted & Marion Outerbridge these two mix mind bending illusions with comedy and humour....wonderful entertainment!

On February 24th, Ballet Jorgen Canada will be dancing across our stage again, this time with their interpretation of Cinderella! This can not be missed!

Film Society - January 11th

The Film Society is an evening of discussion, door prizes and a chance to catch a rare classic on the big screen. This Monday we are playing "Casablanca", where so many famous lines come from, like "here's lookin' at you kid" and other great lines.

The evening is hosted by a lovely woman who opens the door for discussion and debate on films that we play at the film society. We have anywhere between 10-25 people attend which is a shame that we can't get more because of the classics that we show. The cost is only a measly 10 bucks and it gets you into view our beautiful theatre, watch a great film on a huge screen and enters you into a few door prizes, like free movie passes at the local cinema and/or free luches at a great little restaurant called "Ernie's".

The Film Society has some dedicated viewers and its fantastic to get their support. We thank them for that. I wish more people would take this rare opportunity to view these films. There is a great season planned this year with films like "Shane", "Meet me in St. Louis", and more.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Get ready, the sketch comedians are going to be here on the 12th!

December 12th at 7:30pm, Dance Party of Newfoundland will be on stage.

Laughter, smiles and wit will be heard from the stage this Saturday night. This group is just in time for office Christmas parties, friends who want to have an evening out before Santa comes and for our beloved Newfie friends that miss their hometown humour.

Well we are into the School Christmas Concert Season!!
So far we have had two schools here and there are quite a few more to grace our stage.

So far we have seen little ones dressed as clowns, cowboys and angels....what next??
